Effects of kinematics constraints on hand trajectory during whole-body lifting tasks
2000
Trajectories of the hands and whole-body center of mass were studied during whole-body lifting tasks. The movements of different parts of the body were monitored with the ELITE system. Subjects were instructed to lift to shoulder height an object placed at one of two distances (5-45 cm) before them on the floor. The lifts were performed both with and without kinematics constraints (i.e. to produce a straight hand trajectory while lifting, and to lift without any instructions, respectively). Hand trajectories were roughly straight when performed under the constrained condition, but curved when performed without instruction. Hand velocity curves showed bell-shaped profiles. In both groups, bo…
Determining the location of the body׳s center of mass for different groups of physically active people
2013
The purpose of the present study was to compare the location of the body center of mass (CoM) determined by using a high accuracy reaction board (RB) and two different segment parameter models for motion analysis (Dempster, 1955, DEM and de Leva, 1996 adjusted from Zatsiorsky and Seluyanov, ZAT). The body CoM (expressed as percentage of the total body height) was determined from several subjects including athletes as well as physically active students and sedentary people. Some significant differences were found in the location of the body CoM between the used segment models and the reaction board method for all male subjects (n=58, 57.03±0.79%, 56.20±0.76% and 57.60±0.76% for RB, ZAT and D…

Comparison of body segment models for female high jumpers utilising DXA images
2022
In motion analysis of sport competitions, the question is often about the most convenient choice for defining the segment endpoints when no visible landmarks can be used. The purpose of the present study was to determine the location of the body centre of mass (CoM) of female high jumpers by using a high accuracy reaction board and two different segment models: Dempster, 1955, de Leva, 1996. Digitising the bony landmarks from the images of dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and overhead digital camera were used to compare the digitising accuracy. The location of the CoM determined by a reaction board was 55.88 ± 0.52 % of subjects’ body height. The segment model of Dempster digitized fr…
Uncertainties in polarimetric 3D reconstructions of coronal mass ejections
2015
P.P. acknowledges STFC for financial support. Date of Acceptance: 21/01/2015 Aims. The aim of this work is to quantify the uncertainties in the three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the location of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) obtained with the so-called polarization ratio technique. The method takes advantage of the different distributions along the line of sight of total (tB) and polarized (pB) brightnesses emitted by Thomson scattering to estimate the average location of the emitting plasma. This is particularly important to correctly identify of CME propagation angles and unprojected velocities, thus allowing better capabilities for space weather forecastings. Methods. To this end, …
A Simple Multibody Dynamic Model of Cross-Country Ski-Skating
2013
The purpose of this paper is to present the development of a simple multibody dynamic model matching the observed movements of the center of mass of a skier performing the skating technique in cross-country skiing. The formulation of the equation of motion was made using the Euler–Lagrange equations applied to a multibody tree-type system in three dimensions. The description of the lower limb of the skier and the ski was completed by employing three bodies, one representing the ski, and two representing the natural movements of the leg of the skier. This simple model is able to show an approximation of the movement of the center of mass of the skier and its velocity behavior allowing to stu…

Post-post-Newtonian effects on a clean nearly-Newtonian binary
1983
The see-saw portal at future Higgs Factories
2020
We consider an extension of the Standard Model with two right-handed singlet fermions with mass at the electroweak scale that induce neutrino masses, plus a generic new physics sector at a higher scale $\Lambda$. We focus on the effective operators of lowest dimension $d=5$, which induce new production and decay modes for the singlet fermions. We assess the sensitivity of future Higgs Factories, such as FCC-ee, CLIC-380, ILC and CEPC, to the coefficients of these operators for various center of mass energies. We show that future lepton colliders can test the cut-off of the theory up to $\Lambda \simeq 500 - 1000\;$TeV, surpassing the reach of future indirect measurements of the Higgs and $Z…
